TRAFFIC REPORT - MAY 2008
I-15 at California/Nevada Stateline (Primm, Nevada )
Even with a healthy surge of traffic for the Memorial Day Weekend, Average Daily Traffic (ADT) for the month was down 5.5%, Weekday off 4.5% and Weekend down 6.5%. There is an anomaly in some of these figures in that the Volume Comparison done by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) calculates Average Daily Traffic on a 30 or 31 day base, while Weekday Traffic is calculated Monday through Thursday, Weekend traffic is Saturday/Sunday, so while northbound traffic into Las Vegas is important and heavy on both Friday and Saturday, the Friday figures are not included in the Weekend statistics.
For the Memorial Day weekend, northbound traffic on Friday and Saturday was down 4% from the holiday period last year and return traffic on Sunday and Monday, the 25th and 26th showed a comparable 3% decline. All of the other Friday/Saturday weekends were also down. Northbound traffic on Friday and Saturday, the 2nd and 3rd, was off 13%, the 9th and 10th, the 16th and 17th -1% and the 30th and 31st -13%.
Laughlin, Nevada (SR163, Davis Dam Road)
Laughlin also saw a drop off in May traffic with Average Daily Traffic off 9%, Weekday off 8% and Weekend down 10%. Eastbound traffic into Laughlin is amazingly stable most days of the week. Fridays are slightly higher, but the eastbound traffic on this road varies little. In May the highest day was 3,750 vehicles while the low came on Monday, May 5th, at 2,649 for a difference of a little over 1,000 vehicles. The Memorial Day holiday showed no significant increase in the Friday/Saturday pattern vs. the other Friday/Saturdays of the month.
There are no statistics to measure traffic coming into Laughlin from I-40. The California Department of Transportation does not put out daily or monthly reports as does the Nevada Department of Transportation.

GAMING REVENUE REPORT - APRIL 2008
The slow down in the economy is having a continuing impact on casino revenues in Clark County and throughout Nevada. The state total win was down 5.1% but still holding to a .02% increase in the trailing twelve months. Downtown took the biggest hit with win off 6.7% but in the trailing twelve months still up .4%. Laughlin was off 6.4% and is now in the negative column in the trailing twelve months by 2.4%. The Strip had the smallest decease , down 1%. Percentage of statewide gaming win (share) on the Strip was up to 52.4% from 51% last year. The Downtown share dropped to 5.2% from 6%. Laughlin's share is at 5.3% from 6% last year.
Clark County win was off 4.8% in May win with share at 84.9%, just down one-tenth of a point from last year and total revenue in the trailing twelve months still holding on to .25% increase.
McCARRAN AIRPORT REPORT- MAY 2008 Total arriving and departing passengers through McCarran International in May were down 4.7% with year-to-date (YTD) traffic off 2.4%. This is a decline of 458,000 passengers YTD. The cutbacks by U.S. Airways are reflected in their totals for the month, with passenger counts down 22.8% and YTD off 22%. A good deal of this drop was due to the cancellation of flights that carried many through passengers. There is no report from McCarran on what percentages of passengers actually have Las Vegas as their destination. A number of the airlines, including U.S. Airways and Southwest, use Las Vegas as a hub.
United's elimination of their discount carrier TED may be reflected in the 3.9% decline in May and the carrier's YTD total is down 7.8%. Although Delta had a 3.3 % decline in May they are holding at a 3.9% increase YTD. American is up 5.9%, lifting their YTD to a positive 1%. The leader of the pack, Southwest, continues to grow with a 2.6% increase in May and showing 4.2% YTD increase. It's obvious from this that many of the passengers coming into Las Vegas are very price sensitive. For the scheduled carriers in Terminal 1 counts were down 4% in May and -1.7% YTD. Scheduled carriers out of Terminal 2 were up 2% in May and -9.7% YTD. Fewer
than 200,000 passengers arrive and depart through this terminal.

HOW DO YOU KEEP CUSTOMER? ASK GENERAL MILLS The cereal manufacturer said it will exceed its full year earnings forecast with strong fiscal fourth quarter sales off-setting higher input and marketing costs. That indicates that the Minneapolis cereal maker is keeping customers from switching from cheaper store brands and is seeing their increased marketing spending paying off.

AIRLINE CRISIS ADDRESSED BY NEVADA TOURISM ALLIANCE
The impact of the airline crisis was discussed by a panel put together by the Nevada Tourism Alliance on June 23rd. The panel included Randy Walker, Director of Aviation for Clark County, Maurice Gallager, CEO of Allegiant Airlines, Scott Kirby, President of U.S. Airways and Terry Jicinsky, of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Amid the doom and gloom about the airline situation, reduced capacity, rising fares, airline baggage charge, Terry Jicinsky had one positive note, there is some indication of an increase in the number of persons per car, from about two to four persons per vehicle. This would make sense because of the cost sa ving
and other economic indicators.
Research done on I-15 in 2006 of over 300 visitors to Las Vegas by the Las Vegas research firm, Marketing Focus , showed that passengers per car was up to 3.2 from 2.6 in the preceding two years. The estimate of possibly four passengers per car is probably accurate. The increase of 0.6% is a 23% improvement. Based on traffic counts year-to-date this means a growth of more than a half million persons on I-15. Even though the traffic count is down 3.6% YTD the increase in passengers per cars more than overcomes any drop in the vehicle count.
Las Vegas Airport passenger count is off 2.4% YTD, which means 458,834 passengers. In summary, airline traffic is down a half million in persons delivered while I-15 traffic from Southern California is up nearly a half million. See: www.nevadatourismalliance/news.com for full coverage of the roundtable.
THREE DAY HOLIDAY TRAFFIC PATTERNS DIFFER FROM TWO-DAY WEEKENDS
The breakdown of northbound traffic on the Memorial Day weekend showed some consistent patterns for three-day holiday weekends. Friday car counts at State Line/Primm started to build at 8:00 a.m. reaching a peak of 2,500 cars per hour from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. and holding over 2,000 cars an hour until midnight with heavy traffic continuing until 2:00 a.m. At 7:00 a.m. on Saturday the traffic was heavy at over 1,000 cars an hour building to 2,500 cars an hour at 2:00 p.m. and holding at over 1,000 cars an hour through 7:00 p.m. There was heavy traffic into Las Vegas both Friday and Saturday and the return was stretched out over the Sunday/Monday period.
This same pattern is probable for the up-coming Fourth of July holiday. With the 4th falling on a Friday, traffic should start to build July 3rd starting at 8:00 a.m. and peaking between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m., holding heavy until 2:00 a.m. On Friday, the 4th, traffic flow will start heavy early in the morning, with over 1,000 an hour and building the same way as on Memorial Day, up to 2,500 cars an hour by 2:00 p.m. and holding at over 1,000 through 7:00 p.m. Return traffic will be heavy on Sunday, the 6th. Last year, with July 4th on Wednesday, traffic was down and it didn't hold this same pattern, but with the 4th of July being a weekend holiday this
year, the traffic flow will be similiar to Memorial Weekend. AAA Travel estimates a 1.3 percent decrease in traffic this year.

IT ISN'T JUST I-PODS AND THE INTERNET
Radio reaches 90 million more people each week than Google reaches in a month. In fact, radio reaches 44 million more people in each week in the U.S. than the entire internet reaches in a month. Research done by ComScores's in May 2008 tallied 143,389 million logged onto Google and 190,858 logged into the internet in the U.S. Radio reaches 235 million listeners over the course of a week, based on the Radar June 2008 radio listening estimates. The radio audience reaches 96% of adults ages 18-49 with a college degree and an annual income of $50,000.
Bob Pitman,is known to most of the world as a visionary. In a speech to the NAB Convention in Las Vegas, he commented that it was frustrating to hear people talk about radio as if there is something wrong with the business. "Radio is mobile, it's easy to use, it has a lot of choice." Pitman went on to say that what makes a good consumer business is convenience and brand - and radio wins on both counts.
I KNOW I SAW IT ON TV AND OTHER FAVORITE MISATTRIBUTIONS Memories, "sins of commission" shape and often distort our view of reality and relationships, according to psychologist Daniel Schacter of Harvard University. Many consumer surveys ask "where did you hear about our product". This is an inaccurate way of selecting marketing media.
Misattribution: People attributed to video what they'd inferred from newspapers, magazines, radio, discussions with friends and other sources. In misattribution people unconsciously transfer a memory from mental category to another - from imagination to reality, from this time and place to that one, from hearsay to personal experience.
Suggestibility: Leading questions or even encouraging feedback can result in "memories" of events that never happened. Suggestion can lead to false witness ID's because even seemingly innocuous feedback can distort recall.
Bias:We rewrite our memories of the past to fit our present views and needs. When memory conflicts with what we're convinced is true it often distorted. |

SATELLITE RADIO PROBLEMS CONTINUE
XM Satellite Radio Holdings, Inc. and Sirius Satellite Radio, Inc. are still awaiting final regulatory approval of their proposed merger. The companies are having trouble persuading consumers to pay for premium radio service. While analysts were predicting higher growth rates for both companies, both are in a no growth mode. With fewer people buying new cars, which is where the companies derive the bulk of their new subscribers, the companies are taking a further hit. Because of climbing food and gasoline costs many consumers are not renewing the service, considering it discretionary. Purchases of satellite radios in stores rather than
installed in cars declined 35% last year.
The two satellite companies are also going to be faced with financing problems. Both companies have big convertible bonds due next year - $400 million for XM and $300 million for Sirius.
In addition, investment banker Goldman Sachs put sell recommendations on both Sirius and XM, lowered the price target for both declared "any imminent merger related strength has passed" and Fortune Magazine's website said "XM and Sirius circle a black hole." | |
